I was a bit skeptical when going into this story as the reviews varied, but I’m so glad I chose to give it a try.
Though there are a few parts that dragged on, it was due to world building and learning about a new history in a futuristic world. The year is 4500 and the descendants of Earth are living on a different planet broken up into three countries (Jaydes, Cerls, and Yalvs). The Jaydes and Cerls are on the brink of war over precious magical metal, while the Yalvs are a mysterious group whom use magic and the others think might have died out.
Much to the surprise of our two main characters, Kase and Hallie, they are not dead. A crew is assembled to find the Yalvs and persuade them to join in the war to defeat the opposing Cerls. Kase and Hallie kick things off as enemies and as this is a true slow burn, their story will continue to unfold throughout the trilogy.
The crew treks across the world to find help and has many encounters with beasts and other humans magical and non alike. Meanwhile we the readers catch glimpses of life back home through a high ranking officer, Jove, who is Kase’ brother.
All in all, the story is truly captivating. There’s adventure, magic, dragons, and tales woven from ancient times to the post modern society they’re living in. I’ve seen many reference it’s similarity to Star Wars and I can agree to that basis. I will also say that anyone who has loved Firefly, Treasure Planet, The Mummy, Atlantis, Divine Rivals, Anastasia, or any other high adventure story will likely enjoy this. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt drawn into a fantasy sci-fi novel and I truly look forward to reading the rest of this trilogy.
