I genuinely enjoyed the first book in this series, which makes this review a disappointing one to write.
First, the audiobook performance deserves recognition. Soundbooth Theater, Justin Thomas James, Jeff Hays, and the rest of the cast elevated this production far beyond what I believe the text alone would have achieved. The narration, performances, and audio engineering were consistently excellent and kept me listening long after my engagement with the story itself began to fade. For the audio team: 5/5 stars.
Unfortunately, the story itself never fully engaged my imagination emotionally, especially in the latter portions of the series. The biggest issue, for me, was a lack of interiority. The author frequently tells the reader what characters feel rather than immersing us in those emotions through thoughts, reactions, sensory detail, or meaningful emotional processing. As a result, many scenes that should have carried emotional weight instead felt strangely distant and emotionally flat.
The cooldown and recovery chapters particularly suffered from this. Major events, victories, losses, and relationship moments were often summarized rather than experienced alongside the characters. What should have been opportunities for vulnerability, reflection, bonding, or emotional aftermath instead became informational transitions from one plot point to the next.
I also struggled with the progression systems and combat resolutions. New abilities and character capabilities were frequently introduced in the middle of major battles with limited foreshadowing or setup. Instead of feeling earned, some climactic moments carried the shadow of deus ex machina, where characters suddenly possessed exactly the ability needed to survive or win.
None of this means the series lacks creativity. There are genuinely good ideas here, and I can still see the spark that made me enjoy the early books. But by the final stretch, I found myself finishing the series more out of commitment than excitement, which honestly made me a little sad given how much promise I felt the story originally had.
Overall: a fantastic audiobook production attached to a story that, for me, never fully delivered on its emotional potential.
