I didn’t get past chapter 7 or so. Carl spent the vast majority of his time being read an RPG instruction manual by a rat man. Every time he opens a loot box, a new REWARD joke graces your ears, but it’s never actually funny. It’s like a 13 year old is ecstatic he got to make dick jokes, but vulgarity and sarcasm aren’t inherently humorous.
The book is the epitome of telling rather than showing. We’re told Carl cares about cats without being shown it. We’er told his personality because he used to be a marine and he likes to work out, but we’re shown very little of who he actually is.
I laughed once, when Princess Donut put on the tiara “because it’s purple.” That was cute, shows us insight about her character, and is humorous because it brings an endearing charm to her. Sadly, the rest of it fell flat for me. I’m glad so many people like it, but I didn’t find the kind of wit I expected (like Hitchhiker or Pratchett) based on so many rave reviews.
