Christian’s blanket hatred of vampires gives him an actual arc rather than just an obstacle to clear, and Lorcan’s need to prove himself as Regent gives the mystery plot a personal stake beyond the body count. The investigation itself, tracking a blessed weapon back to a hunter with a vendetta, is tighter than book one’s, with less reliance on backstory dumps to keep the reader oriented.
