Would you try another book from Chris Pike and/or Kevin Pierce?
No
What was most disappointing about Chris Pike’s story?
Pike tries to tie together too many outcomes in a timeline that’s too brief, causing it to come off as too many convenient coincidences. By the time I got to the end of Book 1 I was able to figure out exactly how Book 2 was going to develop without even listening to it.
I like books about the EMP Apocalypse because they give me ideas on possible survival scenarios and useful equipment. Other books on Audible that cover the genre give a lot better original thinking. It seemed as if Pike simply distilled what authors like A. American and Forstchen write about and created a scenario to fit.
What aspect of Kevin Pierce’s performance would you have changed?
Pierce’s performance was basically OK. He’s no George Guidall, though.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Unexpected World?
I would have added a lot more to fill in the numerous timeline gaps. I yelled out loud when our hero showed Holly how to use the 1911 and gave her extra magazines but stopped short of showing her where the mag release was and how to rack the slide, like she was supposed to figure that out on her own in a life-threatening situation.
Any additional comments?
I hope this critique will encourage Chris Pike to do more in-depth research and better character development before he writes his next book.
