I just couldn’t get into ‘Dead Medium’. The characters are interesting but not that likable, which goes a long way with me getting into a book. The plot doesn’t really go anywhere and I’m not sure what they’re trying to accomplish. There is trying to raise money by having May act as a conduit between the living and the dead, but it doesn’t happen often enough and while the need to raise money is genuine, the author doesn’t give it the urgency to make it seem important. There are the soul stealers, they’re mentioned a ton but we rarely see them and don’t learn enough about them to have them make enough of an impact on the story. In the end I felt like it was more “A week in the life of a ghost” than a mystery. The twist at the end was neat but a little too late and just not enough to really make me enjoy this book.

At first I thought it was strange a male narrator when the main character, and nearly all the characters in fact, are female, but Mr. Froomkin makes it work. He does a great job with all the voices and i really thought he brought the book to life. I don’t think I would have finished it if it weren’t for him.
