Defiance is a great and believable post-apocalyptic dystopian future novel. The basic premise is that swine flu has taken out a majority of the population. Now, in the Arizona desert, the government is trying to seize Dale’s (the main character) water well. The book spends a lot of time building up the story for the next book in the series, but it also starts the action early and keeps it coming throughout the book. There isn’t a lot of time spent building up the character’s back story and that’s something I’m perfectly ok with, because the author still gives you enough to know what’s going on. I found a lot of the characters believable and I appreciate that Dale isn’t a super hero. It’s nice when the protagonist can make mistakes just like everyone else. The narration was great with this book. Kevin Pierce has the perfect voice for this style of book. He didn’t vary his voice much for the different characters, but it was just enough and that really didn’t matter to me, since his voice fit the story so well anyways. In the end this is a great and believable dystopian story and I look forward to listening to the next book in the series.
