if you’ve made it to book six, you already know how awesome this series is. I am continually impressed how, as the series progresses, the author manages to keep the level of laugh out loud ridiculousness balanced with the increasingly heavy and desperate circumstances. This book starts to tip a bit more towards heavy and desperate on the Crawlers’ side, but the Dungeon AI is in top form, and Carl’s inner rage demon is getting well-fed; cannot wait for the slaughter that’s going to happen on the next floor.
WARNING and very minor SPOILER: if you’re sensitive about how religious figures are represented in a book series that’s blatantly irreverent about everything… well, you probably aren’t a fan of this series anyway. but if you ARE, just be aware that this level of the dungeon is themed around creatures of myth and legend, and several religious figures are included… and the dungeon’s understanding and representation of those figures is as messed up, misunderstood, and twisted and you would expect. … if, however, you have a good sense of humor about such things, one of these guys specifically is so messed up that its hilarious.
