I want to start by saying I really love the author’s work, and the excellent narrator Mr Pierce. However, I’m not sure if it’s me, the author, or the perspective the author expects the readers to have. I personally find it annoying that the main protagonists, the governor and the husband, are so unprepared and squeamish about meeting violence with violence. How many times does someone need to inform you by words or actions that they need to be stopped permanently for your own protection and the protection of your loved ones?

Who in this day and age would pick a 22 rifle as the weapon of choice to defend their home and family? How could you believe yourself a “survivalist” if you haven’t trained yourself or your loved ones? I really find the husband to be 🤔 stupid/gullible/unwilling to accept reality?? Not sure how to characterize him. I just know that I find it frustrating that he makes so many missteps.

I personally don’t think this portrays him as a good person, nor that killing in self defense diminishes your humanity. The drive for survival is part of our human nature, and we are never diminished by self defense or defense of our families. Anyone can disagree with me, but I feel those people are the very ones who will fall victim to the worst is any society. Again, although I like the story I still find the reticence frustrating.

That’s my take. Overall it’s a compelling and well told story. Enjoy! 😊
