I’ll admit – I had high hopes. Every time I’ve asked for recommendations for novels like the Discworld, I’ve been recommended this series. It does not stack up. The cat is a nice touch and it gets an extra star for the inclusion of a group of elderly people in post apocalyptic fiction but the other characters are not very interesting and the whole premise is far too loose to hold my interest. Problem? Solved by snarky preteen narrator voice, the puns don’t land, the humour is childish and overall I’m clearly not the target audience for this book because I found it gratuitously violent with little purpose or entertainment. Not even close to Pratchett level, though I’ll admit it’s a high bar. The narration seems fitting for the writing. Overall it took a lot of willpower to finish. Would not recommend to anyone over legal drinking age.
