This is a solid, fun coming of age novel with political intrigue, airships and a taste of magic. There’s some light parallelism to modern political events but it’s not overwhelming or preachy. Could have used a copy editor, but on the whole the small rough patches don’t distract from a good story. Also, it gives a fairly realistic picture of some of the difficulties a diabetic hero would face in a gas-light fantasy type setting, which is something I haven’t really seen done much before. I would recommend Dream of Empty Crowns, particularly for a young audience.
