I’ve attempted to write a review of this “box set” multiple times, only to abandon it out of sheer frustration. I’m now about 34 or 35 hours into this series, and even Kevin Pierce—an audiobook narrator I usually enjoy—sounds worn out by the material.

Without giving too much away, the plot involves the “Chi-coms” occupying the West Coast, locked in a struggle with the “South American Army” for control of the western U.S., while the “African Army” and “European Army” battle it out in the East. An “African Army”? Really?

The story is relentlessly brutal, filled with underdeveloped characters who seem to possess superhuman endurance—taking beatings that would sideline professional fighters, yet somehow continuing on without pause.

It feels less like the author is writing and more like he’s dictating stream-of-consciousness ideas without much revision or reflection. The result is a chaotic, exhausting experience that even a talented narrator can’t redeem.

Billed as an “EMP” thriller, the EMP which is eventually set off has very little effect on the story line.

Unless you are glutton for punishment, listen to something else.
