The book starts off with too many sound effects and music. It never gets better. To make things worse, it is read in a deliberately slow pace that is hard to put up with. It made me constantly want to skip ahead or turn up the reading speed, I did neither and listened to the whole thing as intended.
The music and sound effects were jarring and really took you out of the story. The narrator even sung songs along the way. It was super painful.
The main character was thoroughly unlikeable and hard to listen to. He is so self absorbed and portrayed as a character growing in personality over time, but never really changes.
The world was and the magic system was OK.
