I’m a 45 year old woman. I have been playing video games since ColecoVision and then Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega, PlayStation, Xbox, and so on and so forth. My husband, our adult child, and our two older teens also play video games. RPGs and JRPGs are my jam. I have sunk literally thousands of hours of my life into that type of entertainment, and the really good ones make you not only love the story and the characters, but the world and all its inhabitants. LitRPGs, despite reading so many books and genres of books that I can’t even hazard a guess at how many I’ve read (surely more than 10k and that’s the low end); however, I had no idea that LitRPGs existed. The DCC books kept coming up not only in my Audible suggestions, but also on my Amazon list as “books we think you’d love”. I was on the fence for a while. BUT I took the Audible plunge and I am So Glad I did. This series is not just everything I love about RPGs, but also everything I want in a book. No one is safe, there’s no deus ex machina unrealistic reprieves, and there’s no saves and restarts.
I can see why this entire series has so many positive reviews. It deserves every single one. You don’t have to like video games to love the story. Read it or listen to it, whichever you prefer, but you’re missing out on an amazing adventure if you pass it by.
