Very few authors can pull off this particular type of niche read in the post-apocalyptic field. In fact, Marc Tufo is the only other author I’ve read who has this unique flair for the overly dramatic, snarky dialogue, and comically ridiculous. If you’re already a fan of either Benjamin Wallace or Marc Tufo, don’t even bother to read further; just grab this set.
If you’ve never had the experience of laughing your way through the absurdity of a post-apocalyptic USA, well… you need to know what you’re in for. Benjamin Wallace has taken the concept that only the rats and roaches will truly thrive in this time frame and turned it on its ear. In truth, it will be rats, roaches, and the ills of our common society that not only survive, but thrive. Picture of a group of survivors who were at a Renaissance fair when the “crappening” occurred. They’ve chosen to install the king of the fair as their Royal Family, looking toward a monarchy rather than a more modern form of government. But an ill wind blows in this kingdom.
Or just consider for a moment our heroic protagonist, a man known as the Librarian. He calls himself a Post-Apocalyptic Nomadic Warrior, which sounds WAY cooler than Librarian, and walks the land attempting to save, aid, and support the weaker survivors. He has a mastiff named Chewy and a lot of very cool toys. He’s also got a serious White Knight complex, but he’s a lot of fun. Sarcasm is his superpower, and he wields it like a double-edged sword.
My personal favorite new form of government is found in the third book, as our main characters come to the town of Tolerant. This is a nice change, since nearly every other new town in this survivalist world is named New Hope. But Tolerant’s name isn’t the only thing here that’s unique. This former university town has taken some dynamic ideas that we hear touted regularly these days and turned them into absolute law. The result? I’ll let Benjamin Wallace tell you all about it.
If you’re looking for something that falls into the category of quirky while still providing some truly profound moments, this series has you in mind.
