This is a fantastic story. The world SJ Himes has built sucked me in from the first sentence. This is the second time I’ve listened to this book and I was surprised when I reached the end that I hadn’t reviewed it the first time. I can only surmise I was too excited to move onto the next book in the series.

Angel and Simeon’s relationship is full of prickliness at first because Angel has never trusted anyone due to always carrying anger and grief over a great loss. Simeon’s unfailing devotion gets through to Angel and enables Angel to let Simeon’s love in. Angel also realizes he craves Simeon’s love and support because he’s so very tired of holding the world on his shoulders. Simeon gives Angel his strength as Angel tries to unravel the evil bent on destroying his life.

The magnitude of Angel’s power, his capacity to see good in others, his devotion and willingness to die for those he loves, and his sheer strength of will makes Angel one of my favorite characters in all the hundreds of books I’ve read or listened to. Joel Leslie is simply amazing in his narration. He brings the emotions to life better than any other narrator could have. I loved this book from beginning to end.
