This is not a technical treatise. Those who criticize it for that miss the point.
Humans have created some amazing technologies over time. Most succeed, but some fail. Some fail miserably and harm thousands and millions. ASI may be our biggest and last breakthrough as a species. This book puts ASI into 8th grade language and terms. It uses stories and metaphors to allow the reader/listener to understand abstract and technical concepts.
This book is about the all-too-human psychology that comes into play in a competition or race when the prize is HUGE. Risks are considered only in the context of staying ahead of the competition. The best government regulators can do is play catch up, and that’s even if they care. The US policy today is full steam ahead.
I am on my second listen, now, and cannot find a flaw in their argument. I put a 50% probability on humans becoming the “pets” of a superior machine intelligence or being exterminated completely by one. I am starting to think of my own life expectancy and what I still wish to achieve with the ASI revolution in mind.
I like being a fallible human! Do you? Wake up! We must stop this run-away process before it is too late!
