Currently 37 hours into the omnibus and reaching the wall of tolerablity. The concept is clever and has humor, in essence its like the old TV show “lost in space” but with a grubby twist. The main protagonist is Morticai the Brown, an infamous wizard gone murder hobo fleeing his former life, hitched a ride off Earth via spaceship home with the aid of captain Ramsay, this Dad is a fast talking street wise hustler, petty conman, vagabon, and comedian. His wife and mother of four, rasied religious gone rebel, spent 90% of these 37 audio hours high, drunk, promiscuous, performing scams, or all of the above. The eldest daughter once an adult fled to the space navy to flee her poor degenerate family, helps out in a pinch. The next eldest is a teen boy of 13 year coming of age starts as a well thought out character, quick wit taking after his old man, but soon after losing his virginity with girl. He becomes less the plucky good natured streetwise brat and becomes an insufferable trash talking hustler, 30 hours in and now 14 years old had hinted about a past adolescent queer relationship. The next Ramsay child began as 7-8 year old Mike a shocking bright child whith a penchant for kilts, the color yellow, was on track to become an interesting character then 30 hours in now he goes by Michelle. The youngest is the daughter and her side stories when left unattended, like a forgotten dora explorer, who is often left to roam and steal daddy secret money stash to buy ice cream. The first few hours and serveral books within this omnibus were quite enjoyable, funny even, I wish I ended on a high note after the pirates highjacked the church space ship arch concluded. After that the writing felt lazy and characters quirks repetitive. Story recipe amounts to family gets in trouble of their own making, Wizard Mort to the rescue, murders everything, rinse and repeat. Some interactions and motives don’t feel natural to the charaters. Mort Uber genius wizard who can will people out of existence can’t operate a coffee maker, funny maybe but is is believable. For what was supposed to be a comedy began well then it devolved. No family could survive their life style, the level of depravity at times left me uncomfortable. The writer does have talent and it shines at times, but needs to keep his characters likable. The voice performance was spectacular 10/10👌.
