I picked up the box set because it was a deal, thinking it might be fun, but not really expecting much beyond that. And it *was* fun, but I found myself also enjoying:
1. Good word choice – I can’t tell you how much I hate when authors have a favorite few words that they think make them sound smart. Another author I’m currently reading can’t stop using “palpable” and it drives me crazy! (Not everything is palpable !) But Duck & Cover uses a large vocabulary to evoke images and feelings without sounding pretentious. Love it!
2. An Understanding of Tropes – I wish I could discuss this without spoiling things. Suffice it to say that the author knows how to turn tropes on their heads without ticking off the reader. So many actors get this wrong. (Lookin’ at you Rian Johnson!)
3. An Actual Good Hero – Are you as tired of the ‘unwilling hero’ or ‘anti-hero’ main characters as I am? Well, here you have a hero who saves people because he wants to be a good guy. And yet he’s also humble and somehow avoids being self-righteous about it. Jerry is the best.
Anyway, I had lots of fun with the first three books and plan to read the rest. Thanks!
