While I usually enjoy a good holiday romantic comedy, A Very Inconvenient Christmas unfortunately fell flat for me.
The premise had potential—the classic “forced proximity” trope during the most wonderful time of the year—but the execution felt repetitive and, at times, more frustrating than charming. The main issue I had was with the pacing and the internal monologue of the protagonist, which tended to circle the same anxieties without much progression until the very end.
What didn’t work for me:
Character Chemistry: I struggled to feel a genuine spark between the leads. Their “inconvenient” situation felt more like a series of misunderstandings that could have been solved with a five-minute adult conversation.
Predictability: Even for the genre, the plot beats were very “by-the-numbers,” making it hard to stay engaged with the stakes.
Humor: Some of the comedic moments felt a bit forced and didn’t quite land the way I’ve seen in other holiday rom-coms I’ve enjoyed recently.
I gave it two stars because Becky Monson’s writing style is easy to read, and there were a few cozy, atmospheric moments that captured the Christmas spirit. However, compared to other holiday romances I’ve picked up lately, this one just didn’t have the heart or the wit to make it a standout.
