I have enjoyed most of L.L. Diamond’s works, but I found this was not their best work. It started off well enough but rapidly turned rather silly — not in a funny way, but in a “this is kind of stupid” way. The main characters (who I initially liked) slowly became less intelligent in their actions and words. The drama in the story felt forced and it seemed to interfere with the pacing of the story. One moment we’re moving along at a nice pace, then suddenly it’s as though the author remembered there had to be so many pages of drama and BAM! They would be shoved into an otherwise enjoyable story. Then the book would resume it’s enjoyable qualities (pace/plot/characters) only to be suddenly interrupted once more by the unnecessary, far-fetched and somewhat poorly written “drama” that only took away from what could’ve been an otherwise decent book. As with the first book in this series, I did not care for the narrator as her voices for different characters tend to blend together (particularly the female characters) making it difficult to discern who is speaking. Even in scenes with a male and female character I found it difficult to tell who was supposed to be speaking. Again, her voicing of female characters is too shrill for my taste and she seems to use the same intonation regardless of the actual content of each statement/question/exclamation. For instance, there were times a character would be “hissing” or “whispering” something and the narrator didn’t change her voice at all. In fact, I swear there was a moment she seemed to increase her volume when the main character was supposedly mumbling something to herself.
