Sybil is utterly insufferable. The novel leans heavily into a performative, “woke” tone that quickly becomes dull, and I only finished it because I’d already paid for it. She treats nearly everyone around her with disdain, including her neighbor-turned-boyfriend Theodore, who is genuinely kind and decent. He deserves far better than Sybil, and frankly, a version of this story told from his perspective would have been far more compelling. The most satisfying moment in the entire book is when Rosalee finally calls Sybil out.
