Where to start? This was one of the most interesting books I have had the pleasure to listen to. Written through correspondence over the years, the listener gets to know Sybil Van Antwerp intimately; her fierce sense of right and wrong, her tenuous relationship with her daughter, her love and devotion to her adopted brother, her loyalty to her friends, and her secret about her son’s death that she carries over 50 years. From the mundane emails to the heartbreaking written confession of her feeling of failure as a wife and mother, the author weaves a story that is believable, captivating and emotional. I listened to this book twice; oh, there are so many nuances that I missed during the first reading. I loved the narration by multiple people; this added to “realness” of this book. Perhaps I will enjoy it a third time!
