Im not convinced that I listened to the same books as most of the other reviewers.
I’m assuming the author is from Britland. The story is set in Canada and the USA, where people speak differently than those in England. It’s as though she’d never heard a Canadian or an American speak. Or anyone, really. Perhaps English is her second language? The dialogue was stilted and unrealistic. The majority of the idioms used were not correct. English and American (or even Canadian) English are different. Just as there are differences from Australian English and the others.
Then there is the terrible portrayal of ex and current military members. They don’t think or act like civilians because of their training. They definitely don’t act like the characters in the books. No one does. While there is a variety of people that have served in the military they all received similar basic training. You wouldn’t know that any of these characters had even heard of it. Never mind the disregard for firearm safety or basic knowledge of the subject.
As for the survival stuff – kudos on the use of the pine sap. That and Jess were the highlights of the entire series. I’d suggest that anyone wanting to write in the subject take a class or several. Or just watch some YouTube videos.
Now for the portrayal of the dog, I do believe Ms. Hamilton has known a Jack Russel Terrier.
When I realized I had sixteen hours left I sighed. I generally use audio books to distract myself while I am stuck in traffic. This is the first series that actually made the experience worse. I won’t be buying anymore books from this author.
