first off, I did like the story and the performances were good, except for whoever voiced Beck. he was completely lifeless and dull.
I had read some reviews prior to listening and the were pretty much all the same in praising both MMCs. I did not feel this way. Beck was a truly great guy. he was patient and always respected Stevie and always put her first. Garrick, on the hand, I couldn’t stand. On the surface, I can see why so many people loved him. He was always wanting to do things for Stevie and was dedicated to her. I just felt he was always manipulative, even before the accident, and never respected her. This was hammered home by a female character (can’t remember her name) who shows up at one of his shows. She latches on to Garrick and he makes a big show of telling her that she needs to accept that he’s not interested and that she needs to showing up where he’s at trying to pursue him. He then has her kicked out. What a hypocrite since at the same time he has refused to take no for an answer from Stevie. She turns him down multiple times but he keeps pushing. He shows up at her car waiting for her and won’t tell her how he knows what she drives. He even shows up uninvited at her job then hangs around without asking me, waiting for her to come outside so he can try and drive her home. whenever she has an issue he trys to solve it with money. He never respects her boundaries when they start dating, always trying to rush her and emotionally manipulate her. Then when he wakes up from his coma he’s so much worse. Hated his character. I was really glad the author didn’t have Stevie show any hint of romantic interest in him after he woke up. it made her love for Beck more believable.
I did like the book but I was disappointed by how many big moments were glossed over. The book spans several years and I understand this has to be done, but too many times important things happen that we’re just told about after. Carrick confronting his friend for saying vile things to Stevie. Skipped. Several big arguments between Garrick and Stevie. skipped. The actual relationship between Beck and Stevie after they finally get together. Glossed over. The biggest let down is that the author didn’t give us the final conversation that ended the relationship between Beck and Stevie. How you could skip over such a monumental moment between these characters is beyond me. A true letdown. Just way too much telling instead of showing. It did have a couple of epilogues that gave everyone satisfying closure.
