I pre-ordered the book and stayed awake late to download it as soon as it was released. I started listening it while on a 39 day streak. It ended that day and I am still less than half way through the book.
The narrator delivers his performance in a droning, nearly unlistenable tone. It has the cadence of AI, making it almost entirely unlistenable. I don’t think I have had a single listening session longer than ten minutes. Even while writing this, I have tried three separate times to listen and have not lasted longer than 30 seconds.
While I think there is an interesting story happening, I can’t be sure. The narrative device is expository. I don’t feel like I am experiencing the events of the story, I feel like I am listening to an uninteresting person describe what is happening. It’s truly grating.
While I am generally a fan of the author, this work completely misses me. Of the nearly 800 books I have purchased over the past fifteen years, I have only requested two refunds. This is bad enough that I am considering that route. It’s been three weeks since I started this title. In that time, I have actually relistened to Drew Haye’s entire 180+ hour Super Powered’s series before reaching the five hour make of this book.
