Reading has never really been something that gets me excited. As a Millennial with ADHD, sitting still to read a story has never really been my forte, much to my chagrin, as I’ve always loved the idea of being tucked cozily away by a little library fireplace, book in hand, rain outside, drinking a hot tea. Twas never meant to be, but, I digress.
It wasn’t until discovering Audiobooks that I was able to dive back into literature for fun. Even with that, however, I’ve found recent popular series to be just simple entertainment, at best – a way to pass the time, but nothing more. A little freebie for my daily commute.
Until this book.
When I first heard about this series, it didn’t sound like anything I’d read before: Dungeons? Battles? Boxers? Alien TV Show? Fluffy Princess Cat? I was intrigued, and I had a free credit, so, eh, why not.
God dammit if this isn’t the best thing to enter my life since I gave birth to a literal child. The humor, the pop culture references, the absurdity, the main character calling out the absurdity, the quick pace. I literally never know what’s going to happen next. This book was unpredictable. There was never a single moment where I was like “Yup, saw that coming.” I finished this book and immediately went out of my way to purchase the entire series. I don’t think I’ve gone out of my way to purchase a specific book since maybe the last Harry Potter book came out about 20 years ago. This book is *Chef’s Kiss*.
And, hey – you reading this review – there’s always a chance you won’t love this series as much as I do; we all like different things, but you would absolutely be doing yourself a disservice to not pick it up and give it a try. I cannot recommend it enough. It was so much fun, and I can’t wait to continue the series!
