There’s a decent premise here, but it’s completely subsumed by all the shortcomings. The MC is an author, and it quickly becomes clear this is a ridiculous self-insert fantasy. Endless navel-gazing involving odd literary quotes and references gets old quickly, and mostly comes off as smug/masturbatory rather than adding to the character. Every company is an asinine mashup (eBaymazon, Walmacy’s, McStarbucks), every situation is a low-effort grab at humor (first girl calls the MC “writer Gideon” throughout, pregnant strippers at a strip club in a scene that otherwise serves no purpose…). The whole thing feels like it’s supposed to be hilarious and ironic, but it just feels cheap and poorly executed. There’s no real character development to speak of. Even the sex is just sad.
It’s frustrating, because the same premise in the hands of a more competent author could have really gone somewhere.
My condolences to the narrators, who did their best to carry this.
