I’d read many superlative reviews and was expecting more than what I got. Pros: excellent narration, overall solid enough plot, mostly held my interest and provided good company. Cons: inconsistent and bumpy execution, stilted dialogue, unnecessary drag in spots, cardboard and never fully realized characters, strained credulity even within the universe of the story. Most of the key twists were telegraphed and then their descriptions anticlimactic. Also little unnecessarily annoying quibbles – e.g., there are many specific places and towns named throughout with the glaring exception of the main setting, which is only ever referred to as “East Coast” – why not ground the reader and just at least name the city and state instead of a 2000-mile expanse?

I got this on steep discount and am glad I didn’t spend a credit. But it was an entertaining enough listen and background companion nonetheless.
