I assumed that anything Jeff narrates would automatically make a book better, but I was wrong. At least for me. I’m not saying it’s not a good story, I’m just saying it wasn’t for me. I just couldn’t get into it. And while Jeff Hayes‘s narration in the crawler series is top-tier, I don’t think this was the right series for him because his energy came across as too over the top for the material he was given. I will say that the story got progressively better as one might expect, but it did not get me to the point where I would be interested in the books in the rest of the series. I can appreciate the originality of the character and the character’s perspective, but it almost feels too specific and really corners the author regardless of how creative they are. Would I spend an Audible credit on it? No. But would I buy it and listen to it when it’s on a “wishlist sale?“ Yes. It’s good enough for a discount purchase. Please understand that this is just my amateur opinion that is based off listening to only 500 or so Audible audiobooks over the last 14 years. Perhaps if I have listened to closer to 600, my opinions would be more credible. Alas, I am like Jon Snow and know nothing.
