I think the voice actor has phenomenal skill and such a range of voices that I can hardly believe it’s all just one guy, but I came to hate so many of the voices. What makes them annoying is some combination of voice acting and the character writing itself. Unfortunately, despite being a major cat lover, Donut is on the list. As the series got deeper I began to cringe every time she had something to say, especially her all caps UI messages and predictable mannerisms and pointless references to Mongo, who I also hate. The voice of announcer Kevin is especially horrible. Samantha got very old very quick. Saying you’re going to kill someone’s mother wasn’t funny the first time, so it didn’t land the 30th time either.
Carl himself is the only character I still like, but even he is becoming a bit too much of a cold hearted killer to truly root for. Sure, Earth is priority number 1 but you should still care if other civilizations are negatively impacted by your vengeance narrative. Being a victim of something doesn’t justify making others suffer (this mentality is already way too prevalent in modern grievance focused identity politics).
The ridiculous scenarios and world design throughout this series is very creative, but left me emotionally unengaged in the end. I like my fantasy to at least feel a little bit real. This series has no resemblance to reality and should be thought of us more of a “just for fun” kind of light hearted experience, not something deeply impactful.
