Matt Dinniman somehow keeps outdoing himself. Book 3 takes everything that made the first two entries so addictive — the sharp wit, the relentless action, the found-family chaos of Carl and Donut — and cranks it up to a level that had me glued to my earbuds on every commute, walk, and late night I could steal.
The world-building deepens in ways that feel genuinely earned. New floors bring new terrors, new alliances, and new moral dilemmas, but the story never loses its sardonic humor or its surprising emotional punches. Carl remains one of the most refreshingly competent yet human protagonists in the genre, and Donut continues to be an absolute icon.
Jeff Hays and the full cast narration deserves special recognition — this is audiobook performance at its absolute peak. The voice work adds layers of personality that make every character pop. If you’re not listening to this series in audio, you’re genuinely missing half the experience. An easy five stars, and I started Book 4 immediately.
