I get so irritated when people say, “it’s as good as One Minute After” or “Alas Babylon,” or “Jakarta Pandemic.” Nope. 98% don’t even come close. Why? Because most writers (male gun nuts) spend way too much time on gear, tactical crap, and imagining their Rambo dreams. Guys, it’s about the STORY. A compelling story with interesting and nuanced characters. Most of the books in this genre don’t come close to the 3 I mentioned. Yes, this book talks a bit about rifles, guns, magazines and ammo, but not enough to make you roll your eyes and wish the writer had said, “He was well armed, he had chosen his favorite 45 pistol.” I don’t need all the accoutrements and special scopes he added. Get back to THE STORY.
Ok, enough ranting. So, in a nutshell, I would give this a strong 9.2 compared the top 3 I mentioned. They are 10’s. This is close. (But get the boxed set). And the narrator is a 9.8. Really good.
