I’ve put off reading this book for sometime and now I regret having it in my TBR for so long. This was not what I expected and more than that not enough.

You follow the story of a young man learning that his world view isn’t the truth and coming to the realization that his father is cold and harsh, while is mother is distant and cool. Yet all he desires is to protect his family and gain the approval of his father.

You also follow his mother, a woman broken and resentful for the path she chose. Despite her family she regrets not leaving behind the ice of her people and following the sun under a man’s skin due to duty. However, she realizes her mistake seeing in her oldest the same shiny light of hope in the man she left behind years ago just as storms roll over the icy mountain they call home.

Just wow, what an intimate story that had me crying my eyes out and profoundly changing my world view despite not living in that world. Isn’t that how books should be? Rattling your beliefs, changing your mind about people, and most of all fundamentally making you better as a person?
