I genuinely don’t know how to rate this cleanly because the pacing is giving identity crisis. The first ~80%? Slow. Heavy. Broody. A lot of walking, talking, political tension, and emotional spiraling. And then the final 20%?? Absolute chaos. Action. Revelations. Emotional damage. Blink and you’ll miss three major plot twists. I finished it like… wait, we’re done already??

This is easily the darkest installment in the Beasts of Briar series so far. If Fall gave you cozy(ish) resolution vibes, this one said “lol absolutely not.” The tone shift is real and honestly a little brutal.

We spend most of our time in the Spring Realm with Ezryn, and I did love finally digging deeper into him—especially his complicated history with his brother and everything that unraveled after their mother’s death. That emotional layer? Strong. Compelling. Messy in a good way.

But let’s talk about the emotional gut punch right out of the gate:
Dey + Rosie = no mate bond after sex.
EXCUSE ME??? Immediate heartbreak. No recovery time either because boom—political chaos, goblins with stolen Spring weapons, and suddenly we’re off to confront Ezryn… who is dealing with his own family takeover situation. Casual.

Meanwhile:
• Kel is off in another land trying to hand Winter over to his uncle (sir… your coping mechanisms???)
• Farron is in Fall playing detective about whether Cass is actually Rosie’s mate
• And YES—we finally get confirmation on the Cass/Kel history 👀 (which, let’s be honest, we all saw coming but still HURT)

Also that bargain?? The reason Kel can’t complete the mate bond with Rosie?? RUDE. I need reparations.

This book is way more fight-heavy than romance-heavy, which explains the lower spice. There’s connection and tension, but it’s not the focus here. It’s very much:
✨ trauma
✨ war brewing
✨ emotional damage across multiple realms

Rosie remains… Rosie. Cute, chaotic, slightly obnoxious, somehow in the center of EVERYTHING. And the Ezryn situation?? I’m still not convinced that mate bond actually stuck because of the rejection element. Like… are we locked in or not?? I need answers.

And then the final chapter comes in swinging:
• Rosie’s mom reveal 👀
• Her opinion on Cass?? MA’AM???
• Implying he’s a good match for one of her daughters???

I’m sorry WHAT.

By the end, I wasn’t just confused—I was spinning. There’s so much thrown at you so fast that it almost undercuts the payoff. After such a slow build, I needed just a little more room to process everything.

Final thoughts:
This book is messy in a “I’m too invested to look away” kind of way. The middle drags, the ending sprints, and emotionally it’s heavier than the rest of the series—but the character arcs and reveals are doing important groundwork.

Do I have questions? A thousand.
Am I frustrated? Yes.
Will I be reading the next book immediately? Also yes.

Because at this point, I need answers and emotional closure like I need oxygen.
