It’s difficult for me to find true crime books with the right proportion of crime vs. backstory. This is a good story, but suffers a bit from focusing too much on the margins. 12 hours is a lot of time to invest in a book, but in my mind Jack Olsen’s other books “Son” and “The Misbegotten Son” are worth it because the subjects commit multiple crimes throughout the book. I’m not advocating the need for multiple crimes to make a good story, but I will say a good story about a singular crime with sufficient backstory and character development can probably be done in half the time it took to listen to this book. Having said that, if you’re a fan of Jack Olsen’s work, it’s worth listening to if for no other reason than Kevin Pierce’s excellent narration helps keep you interested.
