I can not, for the life of me, understand why Jeff and SBT made the decision to CONSTANTLY speak with the character’s mouths full — smacking and completely ruining this series for me. it increased in frequency the further into the series and was so utterly pervasive and constant that I very nearly could not finish the series. We’re raised our entire lives not to speak with our mouth full, a staggeringly high percentage of the population suffer from misophonia (strong negative emotions and anxiety in response to everyday sounds — primarily those related to eating and drinking — so with these considerations I can’t fathom the reasoning behind Jeff’s adding it with such an alarming rate to the narration. In the entire Dungeon Crawler Carl series I can not think of one instance of this and those are twenty to nearly thirty hour audio books. Harmon Cooper does have a minor theme bordering on what can only be described as food porn, but I fail to see how that necessitates the inclusion of all the smacking and garbled banter. It continues the trend through out the Proxima Legends books, immediately occoruing in the second volume leaving me so incensed at this point that I felt the need to write this review. I very much enjoy the story in the feedback loop. It has fantastic pop culture references and a good framework for a legitimately GREAT tale that misses a lot of opportunities unfortunately but hits enough that I finished the entire series even as the food issues had me screaming in frustration at the end. I was unable to finish the extra christmas story at the end because of it. I get how Quantum leaves a lot of people unable to finish as he’s so un likeable at times which is dangerous for a protagonist. i pray that the second volume of proxima legends helps close a lot of these story arcs that were given a tiny fraction of the time they deserved. Overall the ending felt rushed, incomplete and lacking in any sense of impact. With the myriad flaws I still recommend the series. If you suffer from misophonia, however, I’d say HARD PASS. I wish I hadn’t been so invested in the story to the extent I had to suffer through the last couple books so grossly garbled and full of smacking it felt like a war crime. Jeff Hays is easily one of, if not the very best, voice actors currently narrating audio books. Watching his live reads of DCC shocked me as I thought it was a full cast production. As such, it makes the choice to include all the mouth full dialog that much more painful to suffer through. /end rant
