The author displays great familiarity with the actual sources in Papal and French archives. He admits the limitations of his sources, when appropriate, but is brilliant in weaving the sources together. He shows appreciation for the perspectives of his various subjects and points out their real weaknesses. This is real history and I learned much from it.
