This story felt very much like a “Historical Fantasy” to me, with the fantasy elements taking a back seat to all of the interpersonal and political complications. Heartfelt, this story really entrenches you in the horrors and deviation of war, even though there is a note of hope at the end for a life beyond its effects. It’s not a light read, but an in depth and thoughtful one.
