I really wanted to like this story. The premise was intriguing and I love science fiction laced with humor. But I struggled with this narrative. Too much time was spent in setting up the story and the characters, and three hours in, I had yet to invest myself in any of the protagonists. I was quite annoyed with each of them. Sam has no backbone and no idea how real life really works. I have no idea who Anna is, even after a couple of hours of listening, and Randy got on my nerves within a couple of minutes and hasn’t moved off of them since. How far one would have to dig to find any redeeming qualities in them is anyone’s guess. I’m sure events will force these individuals to grow into mature, compassionate yet powerful personalities, and coalesce into a unified vehicle for justice, but when I saw that I had another eight hours of listening ahead of me, I realized that I just didn’t care anymore. Okay, let me rephrase that – I realized that I never cared.
