I love that the book goes into the nitty-gritties of necromancy, like how the bones need to be preped, removing the flesh, etc. It makes the magic system feel a lot more grounded and impactful. It gives off a nerdy vibe in a good way. It’s also surprisingly interesting and doesn’t get in the way of the plot and characters. It’s like anthoer set of progression in the form similar to solving increasingly difficult engineering problems that build on each other. It seems like the author put a lot of work into designing how the magic system works under the hood. The characters are also quite well done, especially compared to a lot of other works in this genre. You get a good feeling of each character’s personality and motivations. The characters are young adults and behave like young adults, with the expected amount of maturity and a sprinkle of irrational behaviors to spice things up. The plot is notably more high-stakes than the author’s other work, and also more grounded in tone, but there is still some humor in there preventing the book from being too dry. A slight criticism is that this story is written as a web serial and not with publication in mind, so there really isn’t a story arc in this book and it just ends abruptly, which can be quite jarring. Since I went into it with the format in mind, it wasn’t really a problem for me, but your mileage mey vary.
