It was really only one narrator, the one who read Helen, but she was so depressing, whiney, sobby, and fingernails-on- a-blackboard irritating that I found myself clinching my teeth. I finally decided I couldn’t stand another second of her. This was barely half way through the book, so out of curiosity I went back to read others reviews to see if it was only me and discovered that, indeed, others had the same complaint. But not only that, there’s also the tiny little problem of the missing chapter 51, which only happens to be one of, if not THE, most important in the book!!!
All of this does a grave disservice to Barbara Davis, who is one of the few authors who is an automatic buy for me. None of is her doing and yet she is the one getting poor reviews on her book. The story of this one, while maybe not my favorite of hers, explores mother/daughter relationships which can often be fraught, end of life and the fear that stirs up in many of us, and the life changing effects of communications/miscommunications, and does so with thoughtfulness and delicacy. Hence my 4 stars over-all when I couldn’t even finish listening.
All-in-all — I want my credit back! Don’t buy this one.
