This is my second go-round on DCC Book 3, and I am adjusting the score to 4.25 stars. I honestly enjoyed it more this time around because I knew what to watch for and could really appreciate how intentional a lot of the setup is. This book does a great job of making the dungeon feel more hostile and the floor design itself stands out here, with challenges that feel less like random survival and more like tailor engineered cruelty. Carl and Princess Donut are forced to rely much more on planning and exploiting loopholes in the system, which made the progression feel more satisfying. Donut also continues to shine, and a lot of her moments in this book add both humor and emotional weight in ways that hit harder on a reread, plus her chimes ins are always a welcomed laugh for the private chats. also really liked how this installment pulls back the curtain a bit more on the show running the dungeon. You start to see more of the manipulation, branding, and audience-driven nonsense happening behind the scenes. The character development for their “temporary” teammate was well done and | look forward to their future fuel for the chaos.
Even on a second read, the pacing still works incredibly well, and the tension never really drops for long. Overall, Book 3 feels like the point where the series fully locks in what it wants to be, and rereading it just reinforced how strong it actually is.
