I love true crime and thought that this anthology would be like a podcast. Alas, for all the hype about the “acclaimed” author and the other contributors, this was pretty thin gruel. The narration was robotic and rather hypnotic–in a bad way, Poor narration keeps me from making full use of Audible. I don’t want a book read with that evening news sing song talking head cadence. Do these people just volunteer or is there any kind of process for selection?
In addition to pretty awful narration, these stories were lackluster at best (I didn’t finish because I couldn’t see it getting any better). I like hearing about crimes in other countries, but historical stuff (over 100 years) not so much. Also, I was familiar with about a third of them–most were just poorly written and dull. This is the second terrible anthology I’ve tried, so I think I’ve learned my lesson.
