I am a well-read sociologist with years of reading dense economic and political theory. I also read fiction avidly, including anything and especially post-apocalyptic. I enjoyed the fictional storylines in this novel, but I couldn’t get through the long descriptions of fjords, ice shelves, and damns or the long, boring chapters on political economy. I enjoyed Frank’s and Mary’s stories, but wished they were a greater portion of the whole book. The first chapter describing Frank’s experience of a heat wave that kills 20m Indians was some excellent writing, but it fell apart after that for me.
