I really enjoyed Nocticadia so decided to listen to another book by Keri Lake. I think she’s amazing at setting a dark mood that doesn’t feel overdone or cartoonish, and yet is almost another character in the book. I’m no stranger to darker romance and mystery so I’m ok with some heavy subject matter. However, I feel this book could use a few trigger warnings for people that may find it too dark. In particular I’m referring to things that happened to minors. I don’t want to spoil too much, but it’s a heavy subject. I understand its place in the story and appreciate the depth it adds to each character. Nonetheless, I had to read this one in bits and pieces, taking breaks. And I know some of the things will be rolling in my head for a long while. I would still recommend the book, but approach with caution.
I absolutely adored the narrator doing the male character- no notes, it was perfect. The narrator performing for the female lead didn’t do it for me. I swear there were times she sounded like a TikTok voice over, you know which one. I found it too monotone and distracting from the story. I feel that was worse at the beginning of the book and when she was acting out some of the other female characters. It wasn’t terrible, but once I heard it like a TikTok I could not unhear it.
