Maybe This Time feels very much like a prequel to Better Luck Next Time, even though neither book is officially listed as part of a series. Both share the same quirky scientist, the timeslip caused by solar flares, and of course, a memorable puppy. Since the puppy is described identically in both stories, and they take place in different timelines, it actually makes sense that the dog is the same. For these reasons, I think the two books really should be grouped together as a series.

What I especially liked here was how much I enjoyed both main characters, Mikey and June, who have known each other since grade school. Their story has a lot of depth and meaningful character growth, but it also balances that with plenty of humor and fun. I found myself liking and empathizing with both of them, which made this book a smoother, more enjoyable ride than Better Luck Next Time—without any of the frustration I felt toward Mona in that story.

The narration and production are once again excellent, a full 5 stars in my opinion. The cast really brings out the emotion and humor in all the right places, making the listening experience even better.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s heartfelt, funny, and satisfying, with characters you can root for and a story that keeps you engaged. A solid 4 stars for the story, and 5 stars for the narration.
