I chose this book when I saw it was produced by Soundbooth Theater and Jeff Hayes was doing some of the narration. I am enthralled with the production and narration they did for Dungeon Crawler Carl. That series is fan-flippin’tastic to listen to. It was DCC that got me interested in LitRPG. I have tried some of the other popular series but end up returning most of them. I keep hoping another LitRPG book will delight me like Dungeon Crawler Carl. Yay!!! I finally found one that tickles my funny bone while delivering murder and mayhem.
I like the set up of how Damon merged with a monster predator. The little monster turned out to be quite cheeky and pretty darn amazing. It was fun listening to Damon’s and Chester’s banter.
I really liked meeting Kristan and hope that there’s a lot more of him in the future.
There are a number of unresolved questions which is good to get me intrigued to keep listening to the series, but some that seem like they won’t get answered – like how and why Damon/Chester absorbed the gem when they were leveling up. I want a better understanding of the guild/magic system.
One thing that is very annoying when listening to LitRPG is having to listen to all the stupid little stats on skills or when getting new magical items. This one was very frustrating at times. When you physically read a book you can just glance over those. It has caused me to give up on some books. I wish authors would keep in mind how it will be narrated for their audiobooks.
I’m looking forward to catching up with our wandering band of adventurers (humans, elves, and monsters, oh my!) in the next book.
