The experience, especially listening to the audiobooks, has been an absolute blast. The narrator, Jeff Hayes, is phenomenal; the vibes he creates are truly immaculate, and he perfectly captures the characters exactly how I imagined them.
Now, as I finish the second installment, and realize the main duo has only just completed the third floor of this perilous descent, a tiny thought keeps creeping in: will the pacing start to feel a little too slow as the adventure continues?
Despite that small worry, the journey of this unlikely pair of survivors is completely captivating. They continue their quest to simply survive the ever-shifting environment, all while gaining critical experience and accumulating an increasingly bizarre array of power-ups and companions. Their actions lead to quite a significant uproar in a medium-sized settlement, and they manage to pick up a curious new ally.
Given the nature of this particular apocalypse, though, I keep asking myself: is anything in this deadly, layered crawl truly as straightforward as it seems?
