I hadn’t vetted this title carefully so found myself surprised when the characters suddenly prayed for e.g. discernment or courage. I’ve never seen that in a book before, but found it interesting.

The American South is a very different world from mine and I stayed with it even through the cringe-inducing naïveté of the main characters.

The rescue of the victims of people-smuggling was gripping, as were the complex family dynamics. Even adult children said ‘yes sir’ and ‘yes ma’am’ to their parents – I have no idea if that detail was realistic or not.

It was a fascinating glimpse into a parallel existence but I wouldn’t read another of the same genre. The narration was excellent.
